win10

The question asks, “Why do so many people hate Windows 10?” But the answers are why the individuals hate Windows 10, not why “so many people” hate Windows 10.

I have been working with desktop computers since the early 1980s. I earn my living managing and supporting computer networks. There has been one consistant theme throughout my career, with every new operating system comes out there are changes. People hate change.

Anyone who knows me will tell you I am NOT a Microsoft Fanboy. But yet I find myself defending Microsoft on a regular basis. When I hear someone blatantly bashing Microsoft, I smile. I take it with the same grain of salt as someone passionately hating a sports team, or famous athlete. The hate is more emotional than logical.

Two decades of Windows history

Back in 2014 when I read numerous articles bashing Windows 8 I decided to do some research.

I searched online technology journals and forums from 2009 and 2010, and found dozens of articles on how people hated Windows 7. Can you believe it? The now beloved Windows 7 generated a fair amount of hate when it was released.

I continued to dig, and searched, and found technology journals and forums from the era of 2001 to 2003 and the birth of Windows XP. Wow, it was like deja vu all over again, the now beloved Windows XP generated a fair amount of hate when it was released.

It is not the version of Windows that people hate. People hate change.

Referencing my perspective

My opinions on operating systems are based on having worked in the IT industry for many years as a Systems Integrator and Systems Engineer. My opinions on learning curve issues are based not only on my personal experiences supporting end users for more than 25 years, but also as a community college instructor where I have taught high school kids to senior citizens how to use operating systems.

My first computer to use a Microsoft operating system was a home built PC using MS-DOS 3.x back in 1984.

Every 3 or 4 years I get a new computer with the latest and greatest operating system that Microsoft has to offer. I get frustrated when I start to use the new operating system. I wonder why they made all those changes.

I tell myself that the changes were good for me. I suspend disbelief and buy into the fact that I needed all theses changes.

The cycle of Microsoft upgrades has been going on for two decades. Just like the seasons of the year, the severity of the changes is different from cycle to cycle, but the changes come, and the changes move on.

I accept the changes, adapt and adjust, and move on, because that is the nature of being an IT professional.

I don't hate Windows 10. I really don't have any reason to say I love it either. I do my best not to get to emotional about the evolution of my computer's operating system.

So why all the hate?
