Along my journeys of studying the history of technology I am fasinated by the many Russian scientists and inventors that often get overlooked by the American and European inventors of the same era.

Russian physicist Vasily Petrov conducted various experiments in the field of electricity in the early 1800s which demonstrated the science behind the voltaic arc lamp.

Russian inventor Pavel Yablochkov developed the arc light idea into a complete system of electric lighting and demonstrated it at the 1878 Paris Exposition.

Russian physicist Alexander Stepanovich Popov conducted experiments in the field of radio in the 1890s. According to some Russian history books the answer to who invented radio is Alexander Popov.

(Be careful if you do a search on just Alexander Popov, he is a popular Russian swimmer).

When you live in the English speaking western world you hear about the American and European inventors, and not so much about the non English speaking world. If you took the time to search you could find many more examples of inventors outside of the American and European Western world. These are just a few that come to mind for me.
